Two kind-hearted sisters who spent the night in a haunted close in Edinburgh have raised more than £1,200 for children’s charity.

Kelly Meighan (30), from Rossie Island, and Amanda Barnett (25), from Lunan, took part in the first Spookathon Charity Sleepover at The Real Mary King’s Close, beneath Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, in aid of ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ - the charity which sent Mrs Meighan’s daughter to Lapland last year.

Erin Meighan (6), who suffers from severe asthma and spends a lot of time in hospital, went on a special visit to the Christmas land with her mum and older sister Ellie (8).

Her mum and auntie have so far raised £1,265 to send another sick child to Lapland to visit Santa by spending the night in a series underground streets in the Scottish capital, which is said to be haunted by plague victims and other ghosts.

Mrs Meighan said: “Amanda spend most of the day feeling sick at the thought of staying down there. It was very creepy and dark down the close and it was very long night with lots of strange noises.”

She added: “We would like to say a huge thank you to Excel Building Solutions, Cala Homes Aberdeen, all the people that work on the sites for Cala, Mums of Montrose Tea Room, Govanhill Equestrian Liveries and to all our friends and family for kindly giving donations to a charity that means so much to us as a family.”
