STEPHEN Quigg of the McCalmans will be the guest at Montrose Folk Club in the Links Hotel, Mid Links, Montrose next Tuesday (September 25) at 8 pm.
The guest originally booked to appear had been Dana and Susan Robinson from the USA. Unfortunately, Dana has broken his hand as a result of a fall. Stephen had originally been booked to appear at Montrose Folk Club in October, along with another former member of the McCalmans, Nick Keir. Stephen and Nick have been performing as a duo but, due to a serious illness, Nick is unable to perform for at least a number of months. Stephen will now revert to his former solo career and, for the fortnight prior to his Montrose appearance, is on tour in Germany playing solo the gigs which had originally been booked for a duo tour by Stephen and Nick.
After almost 30 years as a professional performer, Stephen is still dedicated to the music and songs of Scotland. Accompanying himself on guitar and bodhran, as well as occasionally the banjo, he has an outstanding voice, which captures the attention of any audience.
Through wit, charm and an obvious love and respect for the music, he has built up a large following, who travel regularly to his gigs in Scotland and beyond. The songs range from pin-dropping traditional ballads to footstomping songs of battle. Just as did the McCalmans, Stephen blends with traditional material, songs by the best of the contemporary songwriters to keep his repertoire fresh.
Stephen Quigg has released a new “live” CD which was recorded at one of his regular gigs in the Glenmorag Hotel in Dunoon. The CD contains 15 songs, both traditional and more recent Scottish compositions. A DVD has also recently been released of the final concert by the McCalmans and will be available for purchase at the gig next Tuesday.
Stephen will be accompanied at the gig by his wife. He will be on stage at 8 p.m. with the doors at the Links Hotel open at 7.30 p.m. Everyone welcome.
