MONTROSE Donkey Derby fell victim to the weekend’s weather when organisers reluctantly took the decision to cancel the event.
Heavy rain on Saturday, the negative forecast for Sunday and conditions underfoot at the East Links site, which raised concerns over the safety of ponies and riders, meant they had to pull the plug.
Traditionally, one of the main charity fund-raising events for the Rotary and Round Table, it is the second consecutive donkey derby to be cancelled due to the weather but has, however, been rescheduled for Sunday, July 15.
Rotarian John Paton, donkey derby convener, said: “It would have been well nigh impossible to set out the stalls and erect the fun events in such wet and windy conditions. Consideration also had to be given to ground conditions on which the ponies were to run.
“The event has been re-scheduled for Sunday, July 15, in approximately three weeks’ time when it is hoped that all the partners will again participate and the weather will be a little more kind to us.
“The Rotary Club and the Round Table apologise for the cancellation to both the participants and the members of the community and hope to have a great fun day on July 15.”
