The body of a woman has been found on the railway line between Montrose and Arbroath causing several trains to be cancelled.

British Transport Police confirmed that the body, which was found by the side of the railway track near Lunan Bridge, is a woman in her 60s.

The train route was blocked in both directions between stations at Montrose and Arbroath, and trains were delayed or cancelled as emergency services dealt with the incident.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 11.30 a.m. this morning the body of a woman was found on the railway line in the vicinity of Lunan Bay, Montrose.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish her identity and the circumstances surrounding her death.”

The woman’s identity has not been confirmed, but the body was discovered near where police and coastguard officers have been searching for missing Lunan woman Joyce Howie.

Train lines reopened at 2.25 p.m. but ScotRail said there would be some residual knock-on delays.
