Bank Street Athletic 6 Merpro 4

Merpro travelled through to Fairfield Park, Dundee, to finish off their 2008/09 season in the Midlands Division One.
Bank Street Athletic had already been crowned champions and were looking to complete their league campaign unbeaten in what turned out to be an exciting end of season match.

While Merpro were ultimately edged out, they fought until the bitter end
and can hold their heads up high for what was a terrific performance in a thoroughly entertaining game.

Merpro started well and Harrison crossed for Donaldson to lay off for Christie to have his effort well blocked in just two minutes.

Merpro's took the lead shortly after a powerful Whitworth run into the box, who crossed across for Chris Milne to evade a defender to knock home from six yards, making it one nil to the visitors after six minutes.

However, BSA equalised after some good play on the quarter hour mark.
Allan came close to restoring Merpro's lead with a rising shot two minutes later, before Christie was unlucky with a with an excellent effort that came crashing off the bar in the 26th minute.

Christie, having a fine game now, then set up Milne with an excellent chance, but as he shot at goal the the ball took a bobble and his effort went harmlessly wide.

BSA, who were under pressure, then took advantage of Merpro's misses and went up the park to score on the half hour mark, butting them 2-1 ahead.

Merpro fought back and Milne created an opening for Christie two minutes after the goal, but his effort was well saved.

Duncan in the Merpro goal then made a good reflex save on the line following an effort from a corner ten minutes from the interval.

Merpro continued to create chances and Christie had an effort just go over following a Donaldson corner kick five minutes from time. Allan then had a go after the ball broke to him on the edge of the box, but he was unable to get his effort on target in the final minute of the first half.

Merpro had enjoyed a good few chances in the first half, but were immediately on the back foot when BSA went further ahead after the restart. A loose header back to the goalie was picked up by an attacker to fire home, bringing the score to 3-1.

Merpro came right back, with Wilson setting up Christie, but his lob went just past the post.

Duncan made another good save after a shot rebounded off of Findlay's head on the 50th minute, and that seemed to inspire Merpro who fought their way back into the match just two minutes later.

Wilson made his way into the box and was looking dangerous before he was man-handled Italian style, winning a penalty. Sean Whitworth duly converted to make it 3-2.

Merpro stunned the champions by netting an equaliser following an excellent run and cross by Milne. Scott Wilson took full advantage to fire home under pressure from eight yards.

Merpro themselves were disconsolate a few minutes later when BSA restored their advantage following a shot from their centre half from 12 yards after a fudged clearance from a corner.

Merpro seemed to have equalised when Allan sent Christie in the clear to run through but an outstretched finger-tip save turned his effort just agonisingly wide on the 66th minute.

The visitors were continuing to attack and Whitworth was unlucky when his effort came back off the post following a Donaldson corner in the 68th minutes.

It wasn't long though before Merpro drew the scores level yet again. Harrison's free kick landed for Craig Christie to ram the ball into the back of the net – 4-4 and everything to play for with only 15 minutes left.

The game flowed from end to end with frantic action and Dunbar made a good save from a 6 yard header ten minutes from time.

Merpro shouted for another penalty when Milne was pushed down in the box but he was denied, with BSA then immediately going up the park and firing a long ball forward which evaded the Merpro defence. Findlay attempted to clear but brought down the attacker, giving away a penalty. Findlay was sent off as the last man and the hosts converted from the spot.

This proved to be the turning point, with Merpro upset that they weren't awarded their own penalty just moments earlier.

BSA, now boasting a numerical advantage, ensure that their season would end without defeat, netting in the last minute to make the score 6-4.
This was another good performance from Merpro, who pushed the unbeaten champions all the way.

Team: Dunbar, Harrison, Houston, Allan, Smith, Findlay, S Wilson (Stephen), Whitworth, Christie, Milne, Donaldson. Subs: Doyle, L Wilson.
