MONTROSE manager Steven Tweed confessed to a feeling of relief after his side finally recorded their first league win of the season, by beating Berwick 2-0 away.

Tweed said: "Thank goodness for that. There have been many times this season when we have come close to winning but we were never able to do it.

"In the very first game of the season (1-1 at home to Elgin) we should have won but didn't.

"Our
run without a win should never have gone this far. The longer it went on, the more it became a psycological weight on the shoulders of our young players.

"Now we can go from strength to strength, but we just have the small matter of Hibs in the cup this weekend.

"Beating Berwick has done our confidence the world of good. They are a decent team and we have gone there as the away side and beaten them 2-0.

"The win will make a few people sit up and take notice, but you know what this league is like. Any team can win or lose against any of the others, whether it be by an individual error or a bit of brilliance."

Steven took the game by the scruff of the neck down at Berwick and lined up 4-3-3 with his three frontline strikers, Gemmell, Tosh and Nicholas, all in the team.

"It was great to have a chance to play them all. Stevie Nicholas is struggling with a groin so I took him off, but John Maitland went on in his place and did well."

The manager hopes that Nicholas will be fit enough for the trip to Easter Road, as Tosh is cup-tied and will be unavailable.

"Paul will be a big loss as he has scored four goals in four games since joining us."

Steven is also waiting on the fitness of Sean Fleming. Fleming made his comeback in the cup against Edinburgh City after a long lay-off and the manager hopes he is now ready to contribute regularly.

"Hibs are the form team in Scotland at the moment and we are the only third division side left in the cup, so not many people will be expecting a surprise, but you never know.

"My players will go out and give 100% and see where it takes them.

"There will be quite a few bus-loads of our fans go down to Edinburgh. The tie will be great for our supporters as they have been though a lot this season.

"We are in this round on merit. We beat a junior side (Banks o' Dee) away, then beat a team from a higher division (East Fife).

"In the last round, ourselves and Edinburgh City had the massive carrot of a tie against Hibs and we came through it. That says a lot about the character of my side.

"After the cup-tie we will get back to league business and I am looking forward to playing a bit more relaxed football."
