Roselea 1 Broughty Athletic 1

ROSELEA ended a long and successful season when nearest challengers for the league title Broughty Athletic visited Broomfield Park last Tuesday.

The home team were without McKellar and Doug Craig for different reasons but still chose from the rest of the squad that has performed all season.

The game started at a frantic pace as both teams looked to get the upper hand. First Rae went close for Roselea with a left foot shot which went narrowly wide before the away side struck in the 8th minute to take the lead. Russell got clear on the right and Smith, running in saw Mustard's attempted clearance go into the net off him from close range.

Watson tried to respond at the other end but keeper Cormack got down well and saved easily.

Broughty went close again as McLeod picked up the ball in centre field and his wind assisted effort beat Lea keeper McLeod but came back off the crossbar before being cleared.

Roselea began to come more into the game and in 33 minutes Watson sent a deep cross which Kennedy controlled only to lay back behind Kerrigan and the chance was lost.

Watson was at the centre of most of the home side's attacks and keeper Cormack had to block with his legs from the striker but the keeper was eventually beaten in 35 minutes. A sweeping move involving Kerrigan, Kennedy and Anderson saw Watson fire home a left foot shot from ten yards to make it 1-1.

Whyte was called into action at the other end in 40 minutes when a dangerous corner was headed goalward and the defender was in the right place at the right time to clear.

The last chances of the half fell to the home side but Kerrigan could not get on top of a driven Kennedy corner and the ball went over the bar then the same player was brought down in the penalty area but no decision was given.

Broughty started the second half brightly and Russell sent in a driven cross which Perera just failed to connect with at the far post.
The game swung back to the other end and Longmuir sent in a dangerous ball for Kerrigan but his header at the back post was off target.

In 65 minutes exchanges got a bit heated and Smith of Broughty was sent off for a second yellow card.

Roselea pushed forward and after a corner was cleared, Miller sent a left foot shot narrowly over the bar.

Roselea made a change and Graham went on as a straight replacement for Longmuir.

Watson then missed the best chance of the night as he raced clear of the defence and lobbed the ball over keeper Cormack but then headed the ball wide of the open goal.

Anderson then brought a great diving save out of Cormack after excellent set up play between Watson and Kerrigan.

The away side were reduced to nine men in 76 minutes when Munn was also shown a second yellow card.

Roselea made their second substitution when Kerrigan was replaced by Page and he immediately linked up with David Craig who saw his shot go wide of goal.

McLeod still had to look lively at the other making a great diving save from a McDonald drive.

In the final minute Roselea went close when Rae went clear on the right and from his cross Whyte saw his header cleared off the line.

After the match East Region Secretary John Reilly presented Roselea players with their league winners medals before Paul Whyte lifted the league trophy to great scenes of delight among the good crowd that turned out to watch the match.

Roselea: McLeod, Mustard, Miller, Whyte, Longmuir (Graham), Rae, David Craig, Kerrigan(Page), Kennedy, Anderson, Watson. Subs: Christie, Riach, Brand.
