Following last week's player appeal and the warning from the SRU, Montrose fielded perhaps one of their strongest starting sides all season, which notably included a full compliment of replacements for the first time.
Montrose started the match
playing with the wind and spent the first quarter camped with the Panmure half, despite several chances to open the scoring, it was a try from close range from second rower Mike Dorric, brushing aside two Panmure forwards before twisting over the line, which set Montrose on their way. Andy Baxter added the extra points with a simple conversion in front of the posts.
However, almost from the restart, a brief lapse in concretation by Montrose allowed the Panmure hooker to score under the posts, for the simplest of tries to level the scores at 7-7.
Despite this setback, Montrose continued to dominate all the possession and terrirory, and further tries Marc Scoular, Aaron Gove and the returning Phil Coral moved Montrose to a 24-7 lead. Baxter added one extra convertion.
Scoular scored another of his now trademark tries by thumping though the Panmure defence from 10 yards, Gove cooley collected a long clearance kick from the Panmure No10 before dancing through the Panmure defence from 50 yards, and Coral rolled back the years by finishing off a fine passing move by rounding his opposite man to score in the corner.
However, with minutes left on the referee's watch, Panmure again scored the softest of tries to reduce Montrose's lead to 24-14 going into the second half.
With the vistors now having the notable advantage of the wind, they pressured the Montrose line for the opening exchanges and scored an unconverted try in the corner to move within a try of Montrose at 24-19.
As the game ebbed and flowed to end to end, chances appeared for both teams, however with the handling conditions far from ideal, both teams struggled to find the scoring pass.
After 70 minutes, Stuart Mitchell sealed the win for Montrose. A series of solid phases from the Montrose pack, allowed the prop to go over unchallenged in the corner. Despite the missed conversion and a late reply from Panmure, Montrose held on for a morale boosting bonus point victory.
The Black Horse Man of the Match was Kieran Scoular for his fine all round display in both attack and defence.
Next weekend the side play another home match against high flying Blairgowrie HSFP, kick off is at 2pm.
