THE Montrose promotion dream died on Saturday, when they crashed 3-0 at Stranraer in the play-off semi-final, but manager Jim Weir remains convinced that over the two legs, the better team lost.
"It is a major disappointment and over the two games, the best team has not progressed," said Jim.

"Wednesday killed us with the number of chances we missed, but a fair share of the decisions didn't go our way.

"I have watched the video and the
re is no argument with that statement.

"I can't fault my players for their effort and I don't think I've seen a better performance than we put on, particularly in the first half.

"Everything went against us, the injuries, the mistake by Mark Peat who has been faultless this season and the sending off of John Baird.

"Going down to ten men for the closing stages definitely had an effect.

"I have a tight squad and I've had to ask a lot of my players all season and it finally took its toll.

"We didn't get the decisions down at Stranraer either, but we have to put it behind us and come back strongly next season."

A big decision went against Montrose early in the game when Garry Wood was sent crashing in the box.

"It was a stonewall penalty. The referee admitted to me that there was contact, but he said he didn't think the player was getting the ball. It defies belief.

"We controlled the game for an hour, then slackness cost us a couple of goals.

"The first goal was crucial and when we lost it, I think our heads went down. We haven't been able to come back from a goal down too many times this season.

"We took a great support down to Stranraer and I appreciate their backing. We can be pleased with our season and I can take a lot of positives out of how the players have performed.

"Our crowds have risen and I hope that will continue into the new season.

"The players return for pre-season at the end of June and I'm already putting plans in place for next season and looking to add to my squad."

Top scorer John Baird is out of contract and could be destined for pastures new, but Weir hasn't given up hope of keeping him at Links Park.

"We have made John an initial offer and he hasn't come back to us. He will look around to see what is on offer elsewhere and he is within his rights to do that, but I wouldn't rule out him staying.

"There is only so much we can offer and if there is better out there, then the player has to make up his mind. He is under 23, so we would get a fee if he goes elsewhere."

The core of Weir's squad are already under contract and the manager said that Hugh Davidson, Paul Stewart, Steven Thomson, John Maitland and Stuart McKenzie have all promised to re-sign.

The manager will have a chat with Ross Gardiner, as the player faces the prospect of a shoulder operation, which could rule him out for a while.

Loan players Garry Wood, Steven Doris and Craig Forsyth have returned to their clubs and the Montrose boss will keep an eye on their situations.

"It depends what their clubs do and we will see where we are in terms of our budget.

"I would like to have these lads back and if they become available, I'd like to think we would be in the mix."
