Montrose 112 Brechin 79

MONTROSE welcomed Brechin to Union Park on Saturday, in a local derby the home side knew they had to win to keep their title hopes alive.
After losing to Rossie Priory the week before, Montrose found themselves dropping to second place in the league but a win would restore their lead at the top for at least 24 hours.

Upon winning the toss Montrose captain Grant Hutchison elected to
bat first, on the Union Park surface, which had seen a lot of rain the few days before.

The usual pairing of Soutar and Christie faced the Brechin openers. After a slowish start they opened up a bit, allowing the scoreboard to tick over to 35 off the first ten overs. Although Christie was scoring freely, Soutar always seemed to be struggling to get his eye in, but it was Christie whose wicket fell first, bowled by Coutts trying to pull the ball to the boundary and departing on 26.

Soutar fell victim to Walker's bowling only 3 runs later, bowled on 13 with the score on 46. Mennie and Gary Hutchison were now in the middle although that didn't last long before Mennie was bowled by Walker for 1.
Grant Hutchison joined brother Gary for even less time as he was caught by Galt off Walker's bowling without scoring.

Montrose were in a bit of trouble after a reasonable start and 55 for four was the score, as Andy Thorogood came in to bat with Gary Hutchison. The veterans knew they needed to score some vital runs.
The score pushed on to 71 before Gary was caught by Brechin captain Barker on 7, and Hornsey departed soon after coming out to bat, bowled Shawn-Lewis for 1.

Aitken was next in, but she didn't see much of the bowling, as Thorogood took over in an innings which was needed if Montrose were to get anything out of a match slipping out of their grasp.

With Montrose on 98, Aitken was Walker's fourth wicket, caught Talengaonkar on zero. Montrose reached the hundred mark before Callum Gourlay was bowled by Walker on zero, and brother Darren Gourlay followed in Callum's footsteps with another zero again Walker taking the wicket.

Debutant Frazer Ramseyer was the last batsmen and he scored his first two runs for the club, before Thorogood was bowled by Coutts to wrap up the Montrose innings on 112. Thorogood scored a vital 33, giving Montrose a chance of victory and Ramseyer was not out on two.

Montrose came to the field knowing they had to perform superbly if they were to keep their league hopes alive. Hutchison and Aitken were the opening bowlers and Hutchison was close to getting a crucial opening wicket third ball of the innings but Callum Gourlay just couldn't hold onto the catch.

After a few quick runs from Barker he departed bowled by Grant Hutchison on 17. This gave Montrose renewed hope and Aitken followed this up by getting the wicket of Nicoll on 5, caught by Ken Christie.

Eleven runs later, Aitken got her second wicket, bowling Coutts on 6.
Thorogood replaced Hutchison and took the next wicket of Talengaonkar for 1, bowled. Galt came in and produced some fireworks as he scored 9 in less than 9 balls, including one maximum, but he was bowled by Darren Gourlay, as the spinner produced another fine performance against the local rivals.

The match was evenly poised with Brechin exactly half way, with their score 56-5, but Montrose felt the happier side after getting the wickets of the danger men early exactly what they had hoped for.

Shawn-Lewis provided some resilience for Brechin, but he had no support from opener Walker who finally fell to the bowling of Thorogood, after a very hard fought 17.

It was a very young tail for Brechin and it showed when Gourlay and Thorogood took the next three batsmen for no runs, Thorogood with two.
Shawn-Lewis had fought on to 19 before his efforts were to fall in vain, as last batsmen Patterson was out for 1, Grant Hutchison getting the wicket caught by Thorogood. Brechin's innings ended on 79.

The result going Montrose's way was mainly down to Andy Thorogood for an excellent innings of 33 and four crucial wickets, and he picked up the Emslie S.Collier Man of the Match award.

Montrose are now in the driving seat for the Dukes Strathmore and Perthshire Union Division 2 title. With Rossie the only team above them they have two more games to play and it all rests in their own hands.
