Montrose stormed back into the top four with a 4-1 win over play-off rivals Elgin City at Links Park on Saturday.

After a couple of disappointing weeks for the Gable Endies the result came as a huge boost.

The Gable Endies got off to a great start when Garry Wood produced a neat finish inside the box after just seven minutes.

But there was more to come to keep the home fans happy just ten minutes later when Stephen McNally doubled the advantage when he rose highest to head home an excellent Jamie Winter cross.

The third came just after the half hour mark when Dundee FC loanee Martin Boyle rifled one in from the edge of the penalty area.

In the 63rd minute Ricky McIntosh sealed the deal as he drove the ball into the top corner after good work from Boyle.

Elgin City managed to pull one back courtesy of Paul Miller but the visitors were reduced to 10 men soon after when Sean Crighton was dismissed for fouling last man Boyle.

With the subsequent penalty Joe Malin put in a fine save to deny David Gray from the spot.

Montrose boss Stuart Garden was delighted to see his side back to winning ways, he said: “It was a great result and it was a great performance from the team.

“They were really at the top of their game throughout.

“It’s definitely good to get back to winning ways after a couple of disappointing results but you can’t have great results all season, no one is capable of that.

“We put out a similar team from previous weeks with just a few changes of position, I really can’t fault them on that performance.”

Montrose are at home again this coming Saturday when they welcome Annan Athletic to Links Park.

Garden added: “We’re confident going into the game. But we know it will be hard as they are a decent side.”
