IT WAS a season’s first for Montrose on Saturday as they secured a back-to-back win.
Still on a high from success against Queen’s Park the previous weekend the Gable Endies made it two in a row when they faced East Stirlingshire at Links Park.
Although ‘Shire took an early lead, the Gable Endies responded well to bring the final scoreline to 3-1, including a double from youngster Martin Boyle.
Montrose started off by far the stronger side and it was Boyle who looked first to find the back of the net within the first three minutes. Denied by East Stirlingshire ‘keeper Calum Antell, Montrose continued the attack.
However, it was the visitors who notched the first goal in their first foray to the Montrose goal.
With an assist from Steven Jackson from his own half, Kevin Turner found the ball and sent it into the net past Montrose ‘keeper Sandy Wood.
The home side responded less than 10 minutes later with Boyle’s first for the game following an assist from Paul Lunan.
Boosted by their equaliser, Montrose looked to get an advantage just minutes later but Jon Crawford’s attempt was denied by Antell.
Just before the half-hour mark, the visitors’ Joseph Dingwall tested ‘keeper Wood but saw his header caught well.
Half-time: Montrose 1, East Stirlingshire 1.
After the break, Montrose came out looking to take the lead. Dougie Cameron was closest in the 46th minute but his cross was swiftly blocked by Antell.
An attempt by Terry Masson looked likely to take Montrose into the lead but again the ball was caught by Antell.
Attempts followed from Jamie Winter, whose thunderbolt of a shot when past the left post, and Boyle who sent the ball straight into Antell’s arms.
In the 68th minute, Montrose made their first and only substitution of the game with Scott Johnston coming off to make way for Garry Wood.
Within three minutes, the change paid off as Wood put the Gable Endies in front with an assist from Jon Crawford.
Despite a renewed attack from the visitors they failed to find an equaliser and their hopes were dashed further when Montrose got their third in the 82nd minute.
With a smooth set up from Winter, Boyle got his second of the game.
With the score sitting at 3-1, Boyle could have completed a hat-trick but his shot at the very end of the game was saved by Antell.
