Johnshaven Athletic 1, Rothie Rovers 2

THE OPENING game of the new season was against last season’s Division 2E champions from Rothienorman, who were promoted along with Johnshaven Athletic into Division 1E.

In only the third minute Scott played the ball to Hector who took it up the right wing and passed back to Scott. He sent a diagonal cross to the far post from where Smith headed over.

A few minutes later R. Blease played a long ball though to Scott Beedie who beat the offside trap then took the ball into the 18-yard box, but the Rothie ‘keeper blocked his shot.

On the quarter-hour mark a quick Rothie throw-in found one of their players who lofted the ball high into the six-yard box. Johnshaven ‘keeper MacLean and a Rothie forward went for the ball. MacLean failed to hold under the challenge, the ball bounced and the Rothie player hit it on the turn into the back of the net.

But three minutes later a home throw-in by Slavin went from Hector to Steven SMITH whose low shot clipped the inside of the post for the equaliser.

In the 43rd minute the ball fell to R. Blease whose 25-yard shot was held by the Rothie ‘keeper.

Half-time: Johnshaven 1, Rothie 1.

Within four minutes of the restart Smith found Scott Beedie out on the right. He played the ball across the six-yard box but there was no one there to fire home.

On the hour-mark a 30-yard Rothie shot went past the post.

In Johnshaven’s next attack the ball was played down the right to Hector who looked to have the simple task to cross to Scott Beedie, but a Rothie defender slid in to make an excellent block.

Johnshaven made their first substitution when an exhausted Kevin Hector came off. Scott Beedie dropped to right mid and Leon Dundas came on up front.

In the 67th minute Johnshaven were on the attack again when Smith found Dundas, who chipped up to Scott Beedie who headed it just over the bar.

Five minutes later a Rothie throw-in found one of their players who then played it into the 18-yard box. MacLean was quickly off his line as he dived and took the ball off the feet of the advancing player.

In the 77th minute a Rothie shot went over the bar. And just after this Johnshaven made their second substitution when Kevin Harrison replaced Scott Beedie, closely followed by their final substitution when Stuart Beedie replaced Steven Smith.

Johnshaven pressed for the winner and Harrison pushed the ball through to Stuart Beedie. The Rothie ‘keeper anticipated his expected shot as he rushed out and dived at his feet to collect the ball.

With five minutes to play a Johnshaven throw-in by Stuart Beedie found Dundas who laid the ball back to him and his first-time shot flew just over the bar.

But in the 86th minute Rothie regained possession, from a Johnshaven goal kick. The ball was played right up the park where one of their players hit a low hard shot past the diving Johnshaven ‘keeper to steal the three points.
