Depleted Johnner make progress

It was cup action once again for Johnshaven, this time in the second round of the Aberdeen FC trophy, against third division outfit Monymusk. Johnshaven were again missing a host of players and were only able to name a squad of 12.

The away team started brightly and were unlucky not to take the lead in the third minute when Cruickshank played in Docherty, whose low shot was well saved. A few minutes later Cammy Spink played a superb through ball to Bell but the striker pulled his shot wide. Johnshaven were handed a perfect opportunity to take the lead their play deserved, when Forbes was fouled in the box and awarded a spot kick. Ross Blease stepped up to take the kick but the ‘keeper saved brilliantly to frustrate the away outfit.

Monymusk gave Johnshaven a warning that things would not be easy and were it not for a headed clearance off the line from Mennie would have taken the lead. Calder was unlucky with a shot from the edge of the box and Sword just couldn’t connect after a dangerous Forbes cross.

Half-time: Monymusk 0, Johnshaven 0.

Johnner made some tactical switches at half-time with Blease and Smith being pushed further ahead. Smith nearly scored just a minute into the half, after some good skill took him beyond the last defender, but the keeper closed him down and his shot went narrowly over.

ROSS BLEASE made up for his earlier penalty miss for Johnner when Sword laid the ball off to the attacker and he cut inside and smashed home with his weaker left foot.

In the 60th minute Couineaux-rice replaced the tiring Sword.

Johnshaven conceded a penalty in the 63rd minute when a defender was adjudged to have fouled a home player in the box. Their spot kick taker smashed it right down the middle as ‘keeper Spink dived to the side.

Substitute Couineaux-Rice was causing the home team all sorts of problems with his pace and was instrumental in the goal that regained Johnner’s lead. He flew down the right wing, beating the full back with ease, before cutting the ball back to ROSS BLEASE who was left with a tap-in at the back post, to get his and Johnshaven’s second of the match.

Blease nearly had his hat-trick when his header from a corner came crashing back off the bar.

Johnshaven got a third with five minutes to go when CAMMY SPINK was on hand to collect a defensive mistake from the home team and slot past the ‘keeper into the bottom corner.

Johnshaven gave away another penalty in the closing stages and the same player took the penalty, again smashing the ball down the middle to set up a tense last few moments.

Bell had one last chance to score when his free kick came back off the crossbar before the referee blew his final whistle.
