Exciting fare at Broomfield

AFTER the previous day’s football cancellations, it was a relief to find a mild morning at Broomfield Park on Sunday, when Golf Inn and Montrose Caledonian Thistle met on league duty.

The game got off to a frantic start with both teams creating chances but failing to make the breakthrough. Golf Inn were playing with a bright Sunday morning sun at their backs.

A slight bit of hesitation in the Golf Inn defence was pounced upon by Richard Stridgeon who squared the ball to Billy CANDY and he finished off well from 12 yards to give MCT the lead just inside 10 minutes.

It was end-to-end stuff from then on but it wasn’t until the half hour mark that another goal was scored. MCT failed to clear a corner and the hosts drew level, with a fine finish from the edge of the box by BARKER squaring the game.

The first half drew to a close with the teams evenly matched but failing to take the initiative.

Half-time: Golf Inn 1, MCT 1.

The second half started just as the first had finished with Laidlaw in the MCT goal and Elgin in the Golf Inn goal making some fines saves to keep the score level.

With 20 minutes remaining a looped through ball from Grant BURNETT caught the glaze of the sun and deceived Elgin in the Golf Inn goal, putting MCT back in the lead.

The Golf Inn then had a good spell of pressure with the MCT defence making several last ditch tackles to remain in front.

It looked like the points were to be shared when, with five of the 90 minutes remaining, the Golf Inn drew level. A drive from 18 yards was well saved by Laidlaw but fell kindly into the path of REID who fired high into the net.

MCT picked their heads up and pushed forward winning a corner straight from the re-start. The corner was whipped in from Jamie Young and through a packed penalty box Darren McLEAN rose like a salmon and powered a header into the top corner of the Golf Inn net.

The referee played four extra minutes due to injuries to MCT pair Wales and Robb but the Golf Inn couldn’t find a way back.

MCT could have extended their lead when a good through-ball from Burnett was latched onto by Candy who slipped it through to Jamie Young, but his shot just slid past the post.

MCT: Laidlaw, Robb (Ferguson), Deryk McLean, Darren McLean, McIntosh, Burnett, Wales (Towns), Lownie, Young, Stridgeon, Candy and Thomson.
