First half action sees Johnshaven hit back

Johnshaven Athletic 3,

Old Aberdonians 3

JOHNSHAVEN on Saturday faced Old Aberdonians, a team from the top section of their league which last season was in the Premier Division.

In the second minute Old Aberdonians went down the left then crossed the ball into their unmarked striker who scored with a header to put them into an early lead.

Things got worse eight minutes later when a chip over the top beat the offside trap and the Old Aberdonians’ striker doubled their lead.

In the 14th minute Johnshaven went on the attack when Harrison played the ball through to Scott Beedie who rounded the ‘keeper but his shot hit the post. The ball rebounded back to him and he squared it to Steven SMITH who shot past the visiting defender on the line to make the score start to look more respectable.

The visitors’ two-goal cushion was restored mid-way through the half when the Old Aberdonians’ winger cut the ball before shooting from the edge of the box. Johnshaven ‘keeper MacLean got a touch but it was not enough to prevent the goal.

In the 28th minute Burnett held up the ball then played it into Haggart but his shot went straight to the ‘keeper.

A couple of minutes later Steven SMITH latched on to a short pass, then skinned his man before shooting into the top corner for his second goal of the game.

With only four minutes to go to the interval, a Johnshaven free kick by Burnett went to Haggart. His shot led to a corner by Smith, played to James MENNIE, who headed home for the equaliser.

Half-time: Johnshaven 3, Old Aberdonians 3.

Five minutes into the second half Old Aberdonians went down the left wing and put in a high angled cross which was dipping under the bar until Johnshaven ‘keeper MacLean neatly caught the ball.

In the 61st minute Johnshaven made their first substitution when Leon Dundas replaced Graham Burnett.

About five minutes later, following some good play by Dundas, a corner from him was headed out by an Old Aberdonians defender to R. Blease who tried to score with a scissors kick but the ball went over the bar.

Not long after this the visitors went down the right before putting in a low cross, which was cleared by Scott, with Mennie heading out the resulting corner.

In the 71st minute Johnshaven made a double substitution when Jack Dalgarno and trialist Alexander Bruce replaced Kevin Harrison and Ross Blease.

Five minutes later the home side lost possession in midfield and Old Aberdonians played the ball down the left forcing Dalgarno to give away a corner. The resulting kick was then scrambled clear by the Johnshaven defence.

A few minutes later Johnshaven went on the attack with a pass from Slavin to Beedie who went on a run before shooting straight at the ‘keeper.

With five minutes to play Old Aberdonians again went down the left before putting in a high cross, which was caught under pressure by ‘keeper MacLean.

In the closing minutes of the game Smith played a high ball into the 18-yard box. Dundas chased in but the visiting ‘keeper got there before him.
