Black Abbot 2, Golf Inn 3
THE GOLF Inn won the first trophy of the season after a determined display in a wonderful advert for welfare league football at a windy Broomfield Park on Sunday.
With the winds at their back the Golfy knew they had to take advantage in the first half and after a tetchy opening the game exploded into life after a quarter of an hour. A Millar corner found it’s way to Jack Roger who’s initial effort was saved by Melrose, Roger managed to poke the rebound home to open the scoring, this shocked the Abbot and within a few minutes they were two down when Kevin Craig picked the ball up on the edge of the box and fired past Melrose.
This prompted a reply from the Abbot and Keddie was denied by a great block from Soutar then Fyfie shot narrowly wide when well positioned.
The second half started with the Abbot pressing as they tried to take advantage of the wind, Keddie just failed to get on the end of a Fyfie cross and Clayton shot narrowly over, the Golfy then stuck the hammer blow when Barker was felled in the box and Chris Millar stepped up to ram home the penalty.
Barker was then denied by a great save by Melrose as the Golfy tried to wrap the game up.
The Abbot got a way back into when Steven Ross headed home from a corner with 20 minutes remaining, from there it was back to the walls stuff for the Golf Inn, they held out until the last six minutes when Chris Fyfie broke through and finished past Elgin.
There was almost an equaliser in the final minute when a Duncan shot from 25 yards flew narrowly wide. The final whistle then went to spark celebrations amongst all the Golf Inn players and supporters.
The welfare league would like to thank Roselea for once again providing Broomfield Park for the final of this competition.
