Fordoun Galaxy 5 Golf Inn 1
Conditions were glorious at Broomfield Park on the last day of March when Fordoun Galaxy met holders Golf Inn in the final of the Piggins Cup.
Golf Inn kicked off and the opening five minutes were tight as the two teams sized each other up. The Galaxy struck first when McComiskie beat his man on the edge of the box and slid the ball across the face of the goal to DEANS who slotted home.
In the seventh minute Duncan sent a free kick over the bar after Myers was fouled outside the box. Five minutes later the Golfie also failed to capitalise when they had a free kick opportunity of their own.
In the 32nd minute Galaxy captain Stirling cleared well after a bit of ping-pong in the box.
Five minutes later the Golfie’s right back conceded a free kick and received a yellow card, and from this came Fordoun’s second goal. Duncan floated in a delicious ball which was met by the head of Cargill. Elgin in the Golfie goal made a great reaction save but the ball fell to KEDDIE, who smashed home the rebound and started rapturous scenes amongst the Fordoun support.
With one minute of the half remaining the holders grabbed a lifeline as the left winger cut inside and placed a perfect low cross into the six-yard box which was slotted home.
Golf Inn had the lion’s share of first half possession but the Galaxy were always dangerous going forward.
Half-time: Fordoun Galaxy 2, Golf Inn 1.
In the 46th minute a Duncan free kick was held by Elgin and two minutes later a great through-ball by McComiskie was collected by Myers - but his miss-hit shot went straight to Elgin.
With a little over 20 minutes to play Galaxy ‘keeper Marc Milne was adjudged to have handled outside box but Golf Inn couldn’t make the free kick count.
In the 74th minute Keddie burst into the box and danced past two players before being chopped down by a Golfie defender. KEDDIE dusted himself down and sent the ‘keeper the wrong way from the spot.
Two minutes later Cruickshank cut in from the left wing and set up Luke Myers who shot wide.
Fordoun sub Thomson made an instant impact as he played in MYERS who cut in from the right and slammed the ball past the Golf Inn ‘keeper with 10 minutes remaining.
The Golfie weren’t giving up their trophy without a fight and forced Galaxy’s number one Milne into three cracking saves.
In the 87th minute Fordoun were in dreamland as Thomson again played in MYERS who went one-on-one with the ‘keeper and slid it home.
Golfie had a last chance with seconds to go but Milne saved well and the Fordoun defence cleared. The final whistle went and Fordoun had secured their second trophy of the season in fine style.
