A late equaliser from striker Scott Johnston gave Montrose a share of the points against Clyde at Broadwood Stadium on Saturday. The point made it one defeat in five for Stuart Garden’s side as they look for a place in the end of season play offs.

Montrose still remain six points of a place, so there is still a lot of hard work to be done between now and the end of the season.

Both side’s battled in another Saturday of rain and wind in what was an end to end encounter.

After the victory over Queen’s Park, Montrose made only one change to their line up with Graham Webster returning to the side in place of Jamie Reid.

Montrose lined up in a 4–2–3-1 formation with McKenzie in goal and Crawford and McIntosh in the full back roles. Campbell and Wood were in central defence as the defence remained unchanged for the fifth match in a row. Masson and Watson sat in front of the defence with Deasley, Webster and Ferguson supporting the lone striker Scott Johnston.

On the bench for Montrose were Gray, McCord, Duguid, Wilson, Sturrock, Reid and goalkeeper McCafferty.

Montrose forced an early corner as Clyde struggled to get use to the windy conditions but Calum Ferguson over hit his kick and the chance was gone.

Ferguson had Montrose’s first attempt at goal but his effort from 25 yards out went well wide of goal.

With 13 minutes gone Montrose had a let off when Campbell had a chance to clear but delayed his attempt and McCluskey found himself through on goal but luckily for Montrose the home attacker was in an offside position.

Seconds later, Montrose had a great chance to open the scoring Scott Johnston did the hard work inside the box and laid off a great pass to the unmarked Crawford but he could only curl a left footed effort over the crossbar when it seemed easier to score.

Clyde dangerman Scott Ferguson capitalised on a Ricky McIntosh mistake but his shot was deflected into the arms of McKenzie.

Bryan Deasley, still looking for his first goal since November, then made space for a shot outside the area but his left footed effort flashed past the far post.

Clyde should have opened the scoring when an Alan Campbell mistake saw Stuart McColm through on goal but Stuart McKenzie pulled off a wonderful stop with his out stretched foot to deflect the ball wide of the post.

Clyde then forced a succession of corner kicks taken by Neil Jancyzk and John Sweeney from either side of the park but Watson and Webster cleared the danger for Montrose.

Terry Masson became the first Montrose player to be booked for a late tackle on Stefan McCluskey.

Play was held up as both Clyde’s Ferguson and Montrose’s Scott Johnston required treatment after both received knocks in separate incidents. Both were able to continue after treatment.

On the half hour mark it was the home side who opened the scoring. Alan Campbell failed to deal with a punt up the park and this allowed STEFAN McCLUSKEY with a free run at goal and the striker raced through before neatly chipping the ball over the head of McKenzie and into the net.

Montrose broke at speed and Ferguson and Masson linked up before Deasley was found on the edge of the box but he could only lash the ball over the crossbar.

Montrose had a let off when Crawford and McColm clashed inside the box as they both chased a loose ball. Thankfully for the Gable Endies referee Newlands waved play on.

Two minutes later Montrose won a corner kick after Sweeney headed a Deasley free kick over the crossbar. Ferguson’s corner founded Jonathan Crawford unmarked six yards out but he could only head straight into the arms off Jamie Barclay.

Half time: Clyde 1, Montrose 0.

Montrose manager Stuart Garden made a change right at the start of the second half with David Gray coming onto replace Calum Ferguson.

Montrose won a free kick when Watson was fouled in the centre circle. Campbell’s kick was headed out by the home defence but Ricky McIntosh could only fire an effort wide.

Bryan Deasley was then fouled after he went on a run up the touchline. Deasley took the free kick short to Masson but Wood was adjudged to have fouled giving Clyde a free kick inside their own box.

Garry Wood then picked up a yellow card for what could have only been dissent at referee Newlands.

Deasley then had a half chance for Montrose but after receiving a throw in for Crawford he could only turn and fire over the crossbar.

Montrose made a second change of the afternoon when Ross McCord came on to replace Graham Webster.

Clyde then forced another corner kick but McKenzie easily grabbed Jancyzk’s kick.

In the 72nd minute Clyde winger Scott Ferguson latched onto a goal kick from Jamie Barclay but he could only volley the ball well over the Montrose crossbar.

With fifteen minutes remaining Montrose went close to an equaliser, Gray played a pass inside to Terry Masson, he showed a great touch to set himself up with a shooting opportunity, but his low 25 yard effort fizzed wide of the far post.

Clyde then made their first change of the afternoon when ex-Brechin City midfielder Jancyzk was replaced by Giuseppe Capuano.

Montrose grabbed an equaliser in the 82 minute with a goal out of nothing. Captain Garry Wood launched a free kick from inside his own half into the Clyde box, Watson knocked the ball down and SCOTT JOHNSTON turned to hook the ball into the bottom corner of the net from some 15 yards out.

Two minutes later. Ross McCord gave away a needless foul for a trip on Iain Gray. Marsh launched the free kick into the box but Brian McQueen could only head the ball wide of goal.

Sixty seconds later as both sides went in search of a winner, Montrose’s Johnston was held back by McQueen. Masson played the free kick short to David Gray but he could only drive his shot wide of goal.

In the second minute of stoppage time Crawford gave away a needless foul wide on the touchline after tripping McCluskey. Thankfully for Montrose Ferguson’s free kick was headed well over at the far post by Brian McQueen and the points were shared.
