THE RUN of bad luck continued for Montrose on Saturday when they found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline at home against Peterhead.
Despite playing well for the most part and creating numerous chances in front of goal it was a case of the defence letting them down according to manager Ray Farningham.
“We didn’t get a good result but I thought we played well and put in a good performance. It was just the same old thing - shooting ourselves in the foot by not taking the chances we were given.“ Farningham explained.
He continued: “We could have been three up by half-time and that sets the whole tone of the game when you are missing chances like that.
“Defensively we have been poor and we have tried without success to bring more defenders in. Going forward is not the problem we just need to make more of the chances we are given.”
With most of this season’s goals coming from youngster Martin Boyle and Jamie Winter, Farningham is keen to see more of his players taking the opportunities they are given.
This will be especially important going into this week’s back-to-back home games with Elgin on Saturday and Queen’s Park on Tuesday night.
Farningham said: “We have Elgin on Saturday who are absolutely flying at the moment. But even then I’m going into that game thinking we can win, I just need to get that through to the players.
“It’s not a lack of confidence and I can’t fault them for last Saturday. I was just disappointed that we took nothing away from the game.”
The memory of the last time Montrose faced Queen’s Park has not yet faded as they prepare to face them at Links Park on Tuesday evening, but Farningham won’t let this get the team down.
He said: “We have a horrendous record against them so we are looking for a vast improvement from the last time we played them.
“It’s just a game of 11 men against 11 men in the same division it’s not like it’s us facing an SPL side or a First Division side. It is just a matter of us having to play better against them - which we must do on Tuesday.”
In the last week Montrose have brought in Kevin Brown on a short term loan from Arbroath to provide some much needed cover. Farningham said: “We brought him in because we needed another left-sided player. With Dougie Cameron being the only other really left-sided player that we have we really needed the cover.
“We have been lacking in that all season since Pope and Sinclair left in the summer so that’s why we brought him in.”
