FANS of Montrose FC didn’t know whether to laugh or cry after Saturday’s clinical disposal of bogey opponents Queen’s Park.

Their Hampden Park rivals are third in the league, and might have expected to have overtaken second-placed Stranraer by 4.45pm on Saturday, given that the Gable Endies had not beaten them since December, 2005.

But it was not to be, and the Montrose side which has meekly lain down to far lesser foes, roared like the lion that we all know it can be. The team moved a further three points away from the bottom of the league - a placing that is quite frankly ridiculous given the way the Gable Endies play when everything clicks into place.

Manager Ray Farningham was full of praise for his players, and was particularly pleased that Montrose have now taken points from every team in the league.

He is looking for a strong finish to the 2011/12 league campaign, with another two home matches out of the three left to play.

On Saturday, the Gable Endies entertain East Stirlingshire, currently propping up the table.

But even the lowly ‘Shire, who ground-share with Stenhousemuir, leave Montrose with something to prove, having beaten them twice this season, losing only on November 5, 2-1 at Links Park.
