Heads in hands after five-goal loss

Merpro were involved in the only surviving Division One match on Saturday, but would have wished for the match to have been postponed after a poor performance heavily influenced by a previous night’s social engagement.

Merpro started reasonably well with McDougall picking up a Graham pass to almost break through but the alert ‘keeper advanced fast to thwart the opening. Then Gall had to make the first of a series of good saves, instinctively flicking a shot onto the post to safety.

Merpro had another opening when McDougall again did well to run at goal with his shot deflected into the path of Greig. However, Greig couldn’t adjust his balance to get enough power on his effort at goal. Merpro had settled and were looking more likely to make the breakthrough. Graham was fouled on the edge of the box but Allan’s free kick swerved past the post.

McDougall came close after picking up a Houston long ball and dribbled round the advancing ‘keeper. The ball became stuck at his feet and the ‘keeper recovered to snatch the ball in his arms.

Claypotts opened the scoring with a fast right flank attack resulting in Mark GORGON shooting low into the net from 18 yards in 40 minutes.

Claypotts went further ahead two minutes before the break when BRUCE, looking offside, collected the ball on the left flank, cut inside and fired a rasping shot into the top of the net.

Half-time: Merpro 0, FC Claypotts 2.

The second half started slowly but Gall again had to make a good low down save to thwart the visitors.

Merpro had a chance when McDougall had a snap close range header saved by the ‘keeper.

The homesters had a half chance following a goalmouth melee, with Greig’s resultant snap shot charged down.

Claypotts went further ahead in 67 minutes when the unmarked BRUCE was allowed to run in on goal unopposed.

A quickfire breakaway move down the left flank was crossed to BRUCE to complete his hat-trick with 10 minutes left.

Merpro had a brief rally when Petrie had a snap shot from close range blocked and Lownie made a storming run needing five tackles to take him down.

Claypotts scored again in the closing minutes when BRUCE took his personal tally to four.

Merpro: Gall, Whyte, S. Robertson, Allan, Lownie, Houston, Bruce, Greig (Wood), Graham, McDougall and J. Robertson (Petrie).
