Johner make progress in Cup

Johnshaven Athletic 3 Westdyke 2

Johnshaven secured their place in the third round of the North of Scotland Amateur Cup after a battling display against Premier League outfit Westdyke.

Johnshaven boasted an attacking 4-4-2 line-up with new signing Chris Milne in centre midfield, and the returning Stephen Stephen on the bench. Regular captain Steven Scott was suspended and his place was taken by Ross Blease.

In the 22nd minute a free kick from Tringham was brilliantly saved but no Johnshaven player was on hand for the loose ball.

After a quick Westdyke breakaway their winger crossed the ball in from the right. A Johnshaven defender was on hand to clear but the ball fell kindly to a visiting midfielder who slotted home despite ‘keeper Phillips’ best effort.

Johnshaven got an equaliser just on half-time. Blease did well to win a corner after a jinking run. The winger took the corner himself and found Leven on the edge of the box. Leven dummied for a shot and laid the ball inside to TRINGHAM who blasted it into the roof of the net to give the home team a deserved equaliser for the break.

Half-time: Johnshaven 1, Westdyke 1.

In the 51st minute S. Blease won a free kick on the edge of the box after showing off an outrageous piece of skill that the defender could not cope legally with. DALGARNO curled the ball over the wall and into the top corner to give Athletic the lead.

By this stage the very heavy pitch was in a bad way and it was hard for the teams to string more than two passes together without the famous ‘Wairds Park bobble’ taking over.

In the 71st minute Westdyke gained an equaliser. After conceding what looked like a soft free kick, an excellent ball was whipped into the danger zone and headed home, giving Phillip no chance.

With eight minutes left and extra time looming, Johner put themselves in the lead again. A superb ball from Milne found Scott BEEDIE to be one-on-one with the ‘keeper. As he came out to reduce the angle, the Johner striker pretended to attempt a chip and then calmly side-footed the ball into the empty net from 30 yards.

Team: Philip, Leven (Stephen Stephen), Jack Dalgarno, Ross Blease, Tringham, Milne, Rausch (Stuart Beedie), Tringham, Scott Beedie, Tom Dalgarno, Shaun Blease. Substitutes MacLaren and David Stephen.

Match sponsor: Emslie S. Collier, Funeral Director.
