League leaders too strong for home side

Luthermuir WFC looked forward to entertaining league leaders Stonehaven on a wet day at Luthermuir Park on Sunday.

Stonehaven won a corner on 11 minutes when Boyack headed it out, the Stonehaven midfielder was first to react and cut inside the box where she fired it goal wards but Bruce got there with her head to clear it away from goal.

Nicol came off on 24 minutes and was replaced by Andrew. A great chance on 31 minutes fell to Lownie when Brough played the ball over the back line and Lownie raced down the wing, she cut inside the last defender and headed to goal but her shot was saved well by the ‘keeper.

Within a couple of minutes another great chance was wasted when Charles cleared the ball up field where Lownie flicked it on and Egginton raced clear towards goal, as Egginton raced into the box she fired her shot past the ‘keeper and wide of the right hand post.

The final chance fell to Young just before half time when Godsall through the ball to the edge of the box where Lownie controlled and teed up Young but she fired her shot wide of the post.

Luthermuir started the second half slowly and they paid the price within a minute

A ball down the right was crossed to the back post and Taylor rose unmarked to head it in.

Luthermuir straight from the kick off had a great chance when Boyack put the ball in behind the defence and Egginton raced in on goal but she fired her shot at the keeper and it was cleared. Luthermuir then shot themselves in the foot 60 seconds later when Stonehaven made it 2-0.

The ball was played down the left and a quick one two had Taylor in on goal, from an acute angel she fired it high into the net.

Hendry put the ball over the back line where Egginton took it down and laid it back to the onrushing Young but her shot just sailed past the ‘keeper’s post. Luthermuir then replaced Brough with Santos.

On 66 minutes a free kick just inside the Stonehaven half was flighted into the box where Lownie headed it wide of the target.

Luthermuir then brought on Barker for Burn and switched the formation to try and get back in the game.

On 82 minutes Stonehaven killed off the game when a ball across the back line was missed by Andrew and Taylor took control and fired it low for her hat-trick.

In the final few minutes a foul on Egginton on the edge of the box was whipped over by Hendry and Egginton bulleted a header past the ‘keeper for a consolation goal.
