Lively second half at Fordoun

The FORDOUN pitch was dry and bumpy, making it difficult for either team to play any football.

The home team had most success down the right hand side in the first period with Mo’ Athletic using their speedy front men to create chances on the break.

Thomson, McComiskie and A. Stirling all had first half efforts but were unable to beat the Athletic number one. At the other end, I. Welsh had to leave his line quickly more than once to snuff out the threat of the Athletic attackers.

Fordoun took the lead when good work from Hector and Thomson created a chance for McCOMISKIE and Galaxy’s top scorer finished well.

Half-time: Fordoun 1, Montrose 0.

The second half was livelier and Athletic got back into the game quickly. Fordoun gave the ball away cheaply. Athletic broke quickly and worked the ball to their front man who laid off for a team-mate to fire into the top corner from just outside the box.

Fordoun used all three substitutes as they went in search of a winner and it was the introduction of manager Mark Forbes which proved decisive. With 15 minutes to go R. Welsh swung in a corner which saw veteran striker FORBES work himself some space before leaping like a salmon and bulleting a header past the helpless ‘keeper.

Athletic would not lie down and came at Fordoun again. The equaliser came from a shot which was on target but bobbled in front of ‘keeper I. Welsh and nestled into the bottom corner.

Time was galloping and it looked like Galaxy might have let two precious points slip but they dug deep and McCOMISKIE put them side ahead from inside the box.

The drama was not over as the Mo’ Athletic ‘keeper who’d enjoyed a fine game, was booked for scything McComiskie on the touch line and then received a red card after a clash with Forbes and Fordoun were awarded a penalty.

A. Stirling stepped up and scored from the spot, only for the referee to order a retake which was missed, and that ended serious action.

Fordoun: I. Welsh, Davies (Norrie), Cuthill, Tough, A Stirling, Murray (Deans), R. Stirling, R. Welsh, Hector, McComiskie and Thomson (Forbes). Unused: Pearson.

Both sides are away in the Matrix Cup next week.

Montrose Athletic play Golf Inn in the first round and Fordoun Galaxy play Marykirk in the quarter-finals.
