Luthermuir back to winning ways against Buchan

Luthermuir WFC travelled to Buchan to play their last game of the first quarter in the Scottish Women’s Football League Second Division North on Sunday.

And they were hoping to get another three points on the board.

The pitch was not the best but Luthermuir started the brighter of the two teams. On two minutes Murison played a ball in behind the back line and Coutts chipped the on rushing keeper but her shot hit the post and was cleared. Within a minute another great chance for Luthermuir when a ball over the top from Boyack and Lownie was clear but she fired her shot straight at the ‘keeper.

Buchan had their first chance in nine minutes when a corner from the left was fired over and on the front post the attacker headed home unmarked for 1-0. Luthermuir then pressed their opponents for the next 10 minutes with Lownie and Brough coming close.

They got back on level terms on 20 minutes when a foul on Brough just inside the opposition half was played quickly by Walker and Lownie was clear in on goal; she coolly lobbed the ‘keeper for 1-1.

On 22 minutes a free kick against Murison was fired at goal by Brough but the ‘keeper saved well. Six minutes later good play by Murison and Lownie put Coutts in on goal and her shot was pushed away for a corner. Murison quickly took it to Brough who fired just wide of the post.

On 34 minutes Buchan worked the ball down the left well and as the attacker cut in on goal her shot was saved well by Charles. Final chance of the half on 41 minutes was a corner out on the left to Buchan, where it was cleared by Walker and straight in to an attack by Coutts who headed to goal but her shot was saved well.

Luthermuir WFC started the second half knowing that the next goal was important and within a minute they had scored. The ball was played down the middle from Buchan and Brough picked it up just inside the opposition half and fired it straight at goal where the ‘keeper was off her line and could only palm it into the net for 2-1.

Luthermuir women then continued to press their opponents into their own half and good work on 52 minutes from Barker to Boyack where she cut inside and fired just wide of the target. Two minutes later a foul on Barker just outside the box was fired at goal by Walker but it just missed the right hand post.

Good play on 58 minutes by Luthermuir gained a corner on the right, Murison fired it to the back post and Boyack just headed over. Three minutes later a ball cleared by Charles had Lownie racing in on goal, she tried to chip the ‘keeper but it went just over the crossbar.

Luthermuir were now dominating their opponents and looking for that killer goal to end the game. On 64 minutes a shot by Brough was blocked and cleared for corner, Walker fired it over where it was missed by all with Boyack racing in at the back post. Santos then joined the action for Coutts four minutes later with a slight reshuffle to the line-up.

Godsall got booked for a late challenge on 71 minutes and Buchan took the free kick but it was cleared by the back line. Luthermuir had a few chances but were still finding it hard to get that final goal.

Ten minutes later good work by Young down the left saw the ball played into Lownie where she cut inside and played a low ball to Santos on the edge of the box, she twisted one way then the other and fired a low shot that the ‘keeper saved well.

The final chance fell to Luthermuir on 89 minutes when the hard working Boyack played the ball in behind the back line for Murison to race at goal, her first shot was saved by the keeper and she quickly gathered the ball only to fire it wide of the target on the second attempt.
