LUTHERMUIR Ladies travelled to Falkirk last Sunday for a Scottish Women’s League Second Division Cup third round tie against a side unbeaten in their league.
The game started slowly with both teams creating half-chances but failing to get strikes on target. A great move down the left by Shaw released Lownie but her cutback to the onrushing Burn was just cleared by a last-gasp tackle.
The deadlock was broken on 14 minutes when a great ball from the Falkirk midfielder had their striker racing away clear. As she bore down on goal she fired hard, high and home.
The first real chance for Luthermuir was in 18 minutes when Forbes played the ball in to Lownie and she evaded two tackles to race clear with only the ‘keeper to beat, but her shot was weak.
Young was taken off with hamstring problems on the half-hour mark and Smith went on with a reshuffle of the team.
On 36 minutes good work by Lownie on the far left resulted in a corner. Forbes fired it over and Murison just failed to connect.
Just on the break Forbes collected the ball in midfield and fired a shot from 25 yards that was just wide.
Half-time: Falkirk 1, Luthermuir 0.
A minute into the second half Aitken took a goal kick and a Falkirk midfielder collected the ball 30 yards out. Unchallenged she cracked the ball off the far post to score.
This deflated the Luthermuir women. Falkirk increased their lead on 56 minutes when a corner was headed towards goal. Aitken tipped it against the bar and after a scramble it was bundled in the net.
Then a great pass out wide split the defence and the striker headed across Aitken to score.
Then it was five when a free kick was conceded on the left. From 25 yards out the Falkirk midfielder fired over Aitken into the goal.
On 72 minutes a ball through the middle of the defence had Middleton and Bruce unsure and as both of them left it a striker nipped in and poked it home for the final goal.
Luthermuir gave a run out to Charles in goal for Aitken and Stewart on for Steel who picked up a knock. On 78 minutes Lownie was played down the wing by Shaw and as she raced in the box her shirt was being tugged but the referee played on.
