Paul Hegarty has confirmed the signing of 21-year-old utility man Ryan Ferguson after the youngster left Angus rivals Brechin City.

The former Dundee United and Dunfermline Athletic midfielder - who can also ply his trade in defence or as a striker - arrives at Links Park as Hegarty continues to build his squad for the new campaign.

We were surprised that Ryan became available but we were delighted at the opportunity.

Ryan played more than 20 games for the Glebe Park outfit last season after signing a permanent deal with Ray McKinnon’s side following his release from Dundee United.

He had previously been with City on loan from the Terrors.

Hegarty said the versatile lad will bring a great deal of energy to the Gable Endies side wherever he plays.

He also cited Ferguson as a role model for other young players, adding his surprise that such a talent became available.

Paul told the Review: “We’ve signed Ryan Ferguson the former Brechin City, Dunfermline and Dundee united player.

“We’re pleased that he’s coming on board. We’re trying to get many other players on board but that will take time.

“Ryan brings a lot of energy to the club, he’s a very fit boy.

“He knows the game well and he can play a number of positions. He can play in defence, midfield or as a striker so he’s very versatile.

“I know him from his Dundee United days. He’s a good example for young players. He trains very well and he’s well disciplined.

“He played most games for Brechin last season. We were surprised that he became available but we were delighted at the opportunity.

“He’s a young boy, a local player and that helps. He’s a very good player and an exciting talent.”

Montrose play their first friendly on Saturday, July 11 away to Forfar Athletic.

Admission for the game is £6 for adults and £3 for concessions.

That’s followed up with a trip to face Buckie Thistle a week later before facing Forfar Athletic away in the Petrofac Cup first round.
