HARD work and determination pulled manager Ray Farningham’s men back from the brink of defeat at home to Peterhead on Saturday.
Now a small but very welcome gap is starting to open between Montrose and the bottom two sides, while the Links Park men are arguably only one victory away from fifth or sixth place.
Mr Farningham was delighted with Saturday’s result, which he said was thoroughly deserved.
But at half-time he was not a happy bunny, and had “a few words”, particular aimed at the defence.
The “few words” did the trick, and the team was transformed in the second half, with the shutters going up and holding firm.
There were no casualties as the Gables Endies gave the Blue Toon the blues, and although Paul Lunan is carrying a knock, Mr Farningham is confident that he will be okay.
He is also happy to see the gap in the league and commented: “It’s good to get away from the bottom of the league. It’s a tight league, and if we get a run of good results we could get well up the table.”
He warned that although Peterhead are currently floundering, that will not always be the case: “They’ll get sorted out. They’re not as bad as their league position suggests. They’ve got the players.”
With a free week next week, batteries can be recharged before the October 15 game away to Queen’s Park, a side only two points ahead of Montrose in the league table.
Mr Farningham has arranged a closed doors bounce game for Thursday, to give players not in the first team a chance to get some match practice.
The search to strengthen the squad continues, and the boss admits that he is finding it frustrating not to be able to sign a player he wants.
But he added: “We’re not going to panic, and we’re not going to sign somebody just for the sake of it.”
