A SECOND half fightback by neighbours Arbroath saw them inflict upon Montrose their first pre- season defeat at Gayfield Park on Saturday.
After victories over Stenhousemuir, Raith Rovers and Dundee United Montrose looked to be on course for their fourth win after grabbing two early goals from the on-form Martin Boyle. But a great second half performance by Arbroath saw them score three times to win the match.
Montrose were good in the first period and outplayed their Second Division opponents but in the second half lost their way and ultimately the match.
Montrose sprung a surprise before the match, fielded new signing goalkeeper Michael Andrews. The 20-year-old Scotland Under-21 internationalist had spent last season on loan to East Stirlingshire last season from Falkirk. He was surprisingly freed by Falkirk in the summer in a cost-cutting exercise and had been on trial with Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
The Montrose line-up also contained two players signed from Arbroath in the summer, David Dimilta and David McGowan.
It took Montrose less than 60 seconds to open the scoring.
