Mo make it convincing 3-0 win against Buckie Thistle

Montrose put their heavy defeat to Dundee behind them to record a very comfortable victory over Buckie Thistle at Links Park on Saturday.

Manager Stuart Garden played around with his line up and formation after injures ruled out Jonathan Crawford, Ricky McIntosh and Stephen McNally.

It was a 4 – 5 – 1 Montrose line up that took to the field with Masson, trialist three and five and Garry Wood playing in central defence making up the back four. The five man midfield consisted of trialist six, Gray, Watson, McCord and Young with Scott Johnston listed as the lone striker.

The visitors who had won 2–1 on their previous pre season visit in 2005 had ex Montrose reserve player Gary Hake in their dugout as manager but their was no place in their squad for two ex Gable Endie players Chris Hegarty or Graeme Stewart.

Buckie Thistle played the opening five minutes a man short before bringing on Ben Stewart in place of Lewis McKinnon.

It was the Gable Endies who opened the scoring in the tenth minute some good short crisp passing inside the area involving Gray and McCord saw the latter slide the ball through to TERRY MASSON and from the acutest of angles he blasted the ball into the roof of the net past Main.

Two minutes later the visitors had a half chance when Ian McRae found himself in a good position at the edge of the box but he could lob the ball high and wide.

Montrose added a second goal to their tally in the 22nd minute when Ross McCord swung over a corner kick only for keeper Kevin Main to make a mess of catching the ball and it landed perfectly to LLOYD YOUNG at the far post to knock home.

In the 27th minute a slack pass across the face of the goal from Robert Duncan almost put in Johnston but Main managed to clear the danger.

With ten minutes of the first period remaining Buckie Thistle had another good opportunity to grab a goal again it was McRae who had the opportunity but this time he shot straight into the arms of Sandy Wood.

Montrose kept up the pressure and added goal number three in the 37th minute. Young was held back outside the area and PAUL WATSON stepped up to perfectly curl the ball around the wall and into the net for his second goal of the
pre season.

McRae was proving to be the Buckie Thistle dangerman and with two minutes of the first half remaining he got on the end of a cross but could only head into the arms of Wood.

Manager Stuart Garden made a couple of changes to his line up at the start of the second half bringing on a trialist striker and Jamie Winter in place of Scott Johnston and trialist McSorley.

In the 52nd minute Montrose created another good opportunity when a great crossfield ball by trialist 3 was knocked down by Gray into the path of the onrushing Masson who just shot wide of the far post.

Seconds later McCord was fouled giving the Gable Endies a free kick some 35 yards out. McCord tapped the free kick into the path of Winter who slipped as he fired in a great effort at goal which Main did well to hold.

In the 57th minute Montrose had a further chance to score when McCord played in the trialist striker who was held back. Paul Watson took the kick but Main dived to his right to pull off a great save.

On the hour mark the trialist striker got his head onto a great cross from Gray but his effort when into the arms of Main.

Two minutes later Montrose made a triple substitution bringing on Kieran Sturrock, trialist 14 and Alan Campbell in place of David Gray, trialist three and trialist five.

With 15 minutes remaining of a good work out remaining Jamie Winter almost added a fourth goal but his shot from 25 yards went just over the crossbar after good work once again from McCord and the trialist striker.

With five minutes left Montrose made their final two switches with David Beedie coming on to replace Terry Masson and Ryan Winter replacing McCord. Both these players having fine matches.

Impressive Buckie Thistle substitute Mike Wood had the final chance of the match but this effort landed on the roof of Sandy Wood’s net.
