Montrose end pre-season on high

MONTROSE FC ended their week on a high with a comfortable 3-1 win over Lochee United at Links Park.

Despite being a goal down within a couple of minutes as the defence failed to cut out a through ball and were punished by an easy finish into the bottom corner, the rest of the first half was a bit of a non event. Montrose had plenty of possession but the trialists up front seldom looked like breaking down the Lochee defence as the home side toiled in vain. At the same time Lochee looked sharp on the break and another goal would not have been a surprise as the home side was not settled at the back or in midfield.

Second half substitutions were made by Montrose who brought on Boyle, Garry Wood, Campbell and Johnston. Murdoch and Trialists 9, 10 and 11 went off. Apart from Lunan, who was missing for the game, and Winter who will be out for several weeks, the second half side looked to be the strongest as things stand at present. As it was, the experience of the four second half substitutes changed the outcome of the game completely as Lochee had no answer to the increasing pressure they were subjected to.

In the end, Montrose ran out comfortable 3-1 winners though that scoreline would have looked tighter but for the last minute third goal courtesy of a Garry Wood header. The other second half goals came from a typical turn and shot by Boyle plus a great Masson burst through the middle which ended with him meeting a cross and hammering it in.

First half team: Sandy Wood, McNally, Watson, Crawford, Trialist (Murdoch), Masson, Young, McLeish, Trialist, Trialist, Trialist

Second half team: Sandy Wood, McNally, Watson, Masson, Crawford, Campbell, Young, Trialist(8), Johnston, Garry Wood, Boyle.

Following Saturday’s match, Montrose completed the signings of midfielders Paul Watson and Craig McLeish.

For Watson it is his third spell at Links Park after two previous loan spells whilst with Arbroath and Forfar Athletic.

Last season Paul was with Peterhead before ending the season with St Andrews United on loan.

McLeish is a left-sided midfielder who started his career with Falkirk before having a loan spell with Dumbarton. Last season Craig played in the second division with Stirling Albion.

Meanwhile, Links Park will host ‘Vegas Nites’ a brilliant show full of songs, comedy and dance in aid of the Montrose FC youth development programme.

The show will feature songs from all the greats including Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, Sinatra and Neil Diamond performed by Tony Rydal.

‘Vegas Nites’ takes place on Saturday, August 18 in the Bon Accord Lounge at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £20 and include a finger buffet.
