Point for Roselea in thriller

Roselea travelled to Perth to face Jeanfield Swifts at the Riverside Stadium. The game had been in doubt on the Friday with large areas of surface water but had dried out throughout the night.

Both sides were desperate for the points Swifts for their promotion push and the Roselea for their relegation battle. The reverse fixture had resulted in a 2-0 win for the Swifts 
mid-December.

Roselea shocked the home team opening the scoring in three minutes. Goalkeeper Josh Gray rolled the ball out to Paul Taylor who passed on to Danny Ross. He found Dale Reid in the middle of the park and he played a delightful ball to Calum Watson on the edge of the penalty area even with two defenders around him he had the time to turn and shoot high over the keeper into the top right hand corner 
of the net.

Two minute later Collier’s pass found Watson who chested the ball down to Reid and his effort went narrowly past the right hand post.

Nine minutes were gone when the Roselea conceded a soft goal against the run of play. They lost possession in their own half with Smith picking up the loose ball and running on before finding Holden who beat ‘keeper Gray with a low effort from 10 yards.

Immediately from the kick-off Roselea regained the lead Rae finding Watson who ran to the by line and chipped a cross over to the back post for Dale Reid to finish with an easy header.

In 26 minutes Roselea nearly extended their lead. Watson tested the ‘keeper from 20 yards with a low powerful shot. The custodian clocked with both hands and the ball landed for Collier, but his effort hit the bar. Watson was quick to react, but his header was cleared to safety.

Five minutes later Jeanfield were awarded a free kick 25 yards out, but Mackie hit his effort straight at ‘keeper Gray.

Roselea closed the first half with a couple of opportunities. Firstly, Ryan Taylor’s free kick had no takers when it flashed across the goal, then on Reid’s effort was blocked by the ‘keeper who gathered at the second attempt as Watson was closing in.

The second half got under way with Danny Ross crossing the ball deep into the box and a Swifts’ defender cleared for a corner. From the resultant kick Rae fires on top of the ‘keeper who flapped at the ball before it is cleared.

In 49 minutes Ryan Taylor went in the referee’s book for a deliberate trip, although he didn`t see the player! Mackie’s effort sailed over the heads in the penalty area and out for a goal kick.

As the Swifts were coming more into the game, Danny Ross was next to be booked for a trip on Mackie. He picked himself up and his free kick was wasted as two Jeanfield players collided in the box.

In 58 minutes, and Jeanfield equalise in controversial circumstances. Another effort from Mackie was saved by Gray. Henderson collected the ball as the Roselea players were appealing that it had gone out of play. The referee waved play on the ball is squared along the goal to the backpost where Jamie Reid netted.

Four minutes later, Roselea had a big shout for a penalty declined when Danny Ross was floored by Whitehead in the area.

There was a chance for the Swifts when a pass fell short and sub Burton’s pass fell to Smith, whose effort went narrowly wide. Moments later Burton beat the offside trap and his cross came off the bar with no takers in the area.

With 78 minutes gone Swifts’ Jamie Reid was sent off for another late tackle on Danny Ross, but before the free kick is taken the referee saw an incident involving James Collier and Whitehead on the edge of the penalty box. He sent off Collier for an alleged elbow. When the free kick was eventually taken Rae found Dale Reid at the back post who netted his second headed goal 
of the game.

Six minutes later, the referee awarded the home side a penalty from a corner kick, Four or five players jump for the same ball, with the referee deeming an infringement to have occurred in the area. Holden takes the kick and scores with the ‘keeper going the 
wrong way.

This was a great battling performance and with a bit more luck could have had the three points for the second time away from home this season.

On Saturday, Montrose Roselea are at home to Bathgate Thistle with a 2.30 p.m. kick-off.
