The Golf Inn were confirmed as the Montrose and District Welfare League champions for the second year running after rivals Hudsons were held to a one all draw by City Royal in the Brechin derby.

The Montrose side held a title party on Sunday afternoon after drawing 1-1 with Hudsons in their final league game.

The Golf Inn were deserved winners after dropping only seven points throughout the 24 game league season.

Following Hudsons’ surprise midweek draw with the Old Bolag which handed the title to the Golfy, the two sides played out an entertaining end of season game with one eye on future triumphs in the cup competitions.

The visitors started the brighter and forced the hosts’ ‘keeper Spink into action a couple of times.

When they did beat Spink, the bar came to the hosts’ rescue as Shepherd was denied.

The breakthrough came just past the half hour when McLean was adjudged to have handled in the box, and Callum Valentine stepped up to fire the Brechiners in front.

From there, the home side came more into the game and were denied by some desperate defending.

The visitors started the second half strongly as well, but slowly the champions came out of their shell and were rewarded when Lee Paton was sent sprawling in the box by ‘keeper Calder.

The referee pointed to the spot and Paton dusted himself down to level the match.

The rest of the game was played in a fantastic spirit, and despite some half chances, neither team could find the winner.

The sound of the final whistle saw the celebrations begin in the Broomfield sunshine and after a sticky spell in the autumn, the Golf Inn were rewarded for their consistency since the turn of the year where they haven’t dropped a point until this game.

They now have a chance to add to their silverware in the Matrix cup final on Sunday against Fordoun Galaxy.

For Hudsons, a brave attempt to grab the title fell just short and they’ll be kicking themselves for some dropped points, they can look forward to the final cup completion with optimism as they look forward to the Charles Wallace Cup.

Two of the five Welfare League competitions remain up for grabs, with Golf Inn looking to defend the Matrix Cup when they face Fordoun Galaxy in Brechin on Sunday (May 11).

Before that, the eight remaining teams will compete in the quarter finals of the Review Cup on Thursday.
