Merpro moved into the third round of the Scottish Cup after a superb attacking performance resulting in an emphatic victory against Perth’s Tay Thistle on Saturday.
Merpro went ahead after only two minutes. Robertson floated in a diagonal cross which fell for Craig CHRISTIE to pounce upon and quickly drill a 15-yard drive into the net for a perfect opening.
Merpro continued to blitz their visitors with Rausch nimbly turning in the box and only denied by a close range save in three minutes. From the resultant corner Christie crashed a snap shot off the post.
Merpro continued to dominate and had several good chances to go further ahead without taking advantage. Thistle almost made them pay when a 22-yard free kick went inches past the post.
Merpro heeded the warning and should have gone further ahead when Christie peeled off his marker at a free kick to set up Duff inside the six-yard box but he was unable to get enough power on his clipped effort at goal.
Rausch then had another one-on-one opening with the ‘keeper but was foiled in 35th minute.
Two minutes later Merpro’s fine play was further rewarded with a well-worked goal after a deft lobbed pass from Allan set up Christie to roll a pass into the path of Euan DUFF to score from six yards.
The Motown side went further ahead in 39 minutes when RAUSCH ran into the box to fire a left foot shot high into the net.
Merpro were now rampant and went ahead with another superb worked goal with Christie and Riach combining for the latter to slide a pass into the path of Euan DUFF to fire home goal number four from 10 yards in the 42nd minute.
Half-time: Merpro 4, Tay Thistle 0.
Merpro started the second half slowly and some slackness put the defence under pressure. Thistle pulled a goal back after winning a penalty after a harsh hand ball decision.
The visitors had a spell of pressure but Merpro quickly asserted themselves, going further ahead with another skilfully crafted goal. After a series of passes Bruce slipped a deft back pass for the galloping Rausch to run on to and slip a perfect cross into the box for Craig CHRISTIE to knock into the net from eight yards.
A few minutes later CHRISTIE completed his hat-trick stretching to head home a curled Riach free kick high into the net.
Much of the Merpro play was a joy to watch as the fast passing and interlinking play swept their opponents away. They went further ahead in 58 minutes when Jordan RAUSCH finished off a move, tapping into the net from five yards after good work by Duff.
The home side’s onslaught continued with Petrie pressing down a defender to allow a pass for Euan DUFF to carefully slide a low shot into the net from 15 yards to make it 8-1 in 65th minute.
Houghton fired in a fierce drive well saved by the ‘keeper but Campbell BRUCE latched on to the ball to hook a left-foot shot into the net from 12 yards.
In the closing minutes Grant, making his debut, somehow managed to head wide from a Riach free kick at the back post, creating some merriment for a miss of the year contender.
Three wins in a row for Merpro and a performance that was a pleasure to watch.
