Young Merpro give Morgan a lesson

Morgan FPs 1 Merpro 4

The CURRENT Merpro side is developing, and Saturday’s Division One win in Dundee showed the progress being made as younger players become used to the strength of the Midlands game.

Merpro made the breakthrough in 17 minutes. Euan Duff closed down a defender and robbed him of the ball before passing across the face of goal for Scott GRAHAM to fire into the top of the net from 10 yards.

Merpro went further ahead five minutes later when Bruce set up Graham to run in on goal but his shot was saved. Graham collected the rebound and passed inside for Craig ALLAN to slide a left foot shot home from eight yards.

Morgan attempted to get back into the match with a spell of concerted pressure but the excellent Merpro defence and hard-working midfield thwarted them.

Merpro kept hitting the home side on the break and Duff pulled out a good save from the Morgan ‘keeper.

Merpro weathered the pressure and went further ahead five minutes before the break when Craig ALLAN picked up a pass on the edge of the box. He danced around a couple of tackles before curling a superb low shot from 16 yards into the net.

Merpro had the chance to go further ahead when James Robertson burst through from midfield to run in on goal but unselfishly passed inside for the following up Bruce. The pass was intercepted and cleared to safety.

Half-time: Morgan 0, Merpro 3.

Morgan started the second half strongly, attempting a quick response, but as in the first half a well-organised defence kept them at bay.

Morgan almost scored but James Robertson cleared off the line in 57 minutes to set up an immediate Merpro breakaway. Gove made a storming run from defence, evading several players, but the attack was eventually foiled for a corner.

Morgan broke their duck with a superb long-range goal. Murdoch did well to break up an attack on the edge of the box but the clearance fell for centre half Petrie to fire in a low thunderous drive from 35 yards in 68 minutes.

Merpro replied almost immediately when Graham ran on to a Whyte pass to fire across goal for the onrushing James ROBERTSON to knock into the net from five yards.

Merpro continued to keep Morgan at bay until, with five minutes left on the clock, a defensive clearance was picked up by Lownie, with the referee deciding this was a deliberate pass-back. Morgan were awarded an eight-yard free kick in the box but the massed Merpro defence foiled the effort.

Merpro almost extended their lead when a Hector through-ball was cleared, and in the final minutes Euan Duff had a strong shot well saved.

Clinical finishing helped a determined Merpro display, and returned the side to winning ways.
