Brechin City Youths played hosts to Montrose Youths on Sunday, April 12, for a friendly at Glebe Park for the Angus Cup. The idea of an annual game during the holiday break was created last season between both clubs who share a friendly rivalry. It was Brechin who were the victors last year but on this occasion it was the visitors who proved too strong on the day and ran out worthy winners.
With the full backing of family and friends it was a healthy crowd that greeted the boys on to the park and it wasn’t long before Montrose showed their strength by taking an early lead, following a good run and finish by the striker. A second followed shortly with the home defence being caught out again with another run and cross into the box finding the forward who finished off an excellent move.
Brechin then got back into the game after a long ball found their player up front who used his pace to get in behind the visitors defence before rounding the ‘keeper. The same player brought the home team level with a carbon copy of the first. It was almost the hat-trick just before the half time whistle but the Montrose ‘keeper blocked the shot.
Half-time: Brechin City Youths 2, Montrose Youths 2.
After an even first half, it was expected that the second would continue in the same vein, but this was not to be the case with Montrose completely dominating proceedings with Brechin struggling to get out of their own half. Excellent link up play between the midfield and forwards resulted in a quick two goals. The heads then went down among the home team and Montrose added another four goals for a well-deserved victory.
It was a disappointed home team who came off the park but they were reminded that the game was designed to give them the opportunity and experience of playing at the home of Brechin City and they should not be disappointed with their efforts. Both teams, coaches and parents enjoyed the hospitality of Brechin City Youths and their parents after the game.
A massive thanks goes to Brechin City, Alan and Joyce from the Stables for their sponsorship and Scott Leslie for refereeing the game.
