Andy about to embark on golf tour career
A YOUNG man who learned his golf on the Montrose Links is about to launch his tournament career in America.
Andy Weir (24), hopes to follow the career path of Scots Martin Laird, currently 79th in the World Rankings, and Russell Knox, 340th.
He has spent the past five years undertaking a golf scholarship in the States which has also allowed him to acquire a Degree in Business (Marketing).
He was at Indian Hills, Iowah, for two years, and SMU, South Carolina, for three.
This was no sinecure, with the day starting at 6am with a work-out, then 8 to noon at classes, and golf from 1pm until darkness fell.
In a few weeks he will embark on the E-tour, where prize-money is real and desirable, but more on a scale that ordinary mortals can grasp.
Andy’s ultimate aim, of course, is a PGA Tour Card.
But while working towards that he will be playing full-time tournament golf from February until mid-December, first in Florida and then in the tour qualifying school in Canada.
He has already had 12 top 10 finishes in American tournaments.
Some of the qualifying he will take part in is held on a Monday, with the top four taking part in the PGA Tour event starting later that week.
About four years ago he had a mishap when a shot from the left-hand rough at the 18th at Royal Troon turned bad and he broke a wrist. Full recovery took about a year, and the break is now but a distant memory.
Andy attended Southesk Primary School from the age of five, and then Montrose Academy.
At Montrose as a member of the Mercantile Club he was Junior Club Champion, and also won the Junior Open. He has also played for the Angus Men’s team, and has done decently well in the British boys’ matchplay.
Now although he has deal with Titleist which gives him a very significant discount on purchases, like every other golfer in his position he needs other forms of sponsorship to invest in him to allow him to continue playing. Up for grabs are sponsor mentions on his golf bag, his hat and his jumper.
Andy knows that someone playing in America might have difficulty attracting Scottish sponsors, but with the number of multi-national companies that have strong bases in Montrose there is reason to feel a degree of optimism.
Looking forward to his tournament career he said: “Now is the time to do it, and I’m going to give it my best shot!”
