Grandfather-grandson pair are stars on tennis court
IN A week when Montrose Tennis Club’s men’s first team finally lost a match and the women’s second team kept up their perfect record, the main talking point was the successful playing partnership of a grandfather and grandson.
League veteran Peter Couper teamed up with grandson Cameron Eeles in two successful outings that took the men’s third team closer to promotion in Tayside Tennis’s seventh division.
They won two matches and lost one as the third team beat Falkland 2 away 9-3 and were then instrumental in securing a key 11-7 victory over Scone 2 as they won two matches and drew one.
Peter and Cameron know each other’s games well as they often play singles together, and with Cameron’s play improving rapidly their pairing looked like an idea whose time had come. Peter, a team regular who last year played a first team match, says he and his grandson – one of triplets but the only one with a serious interest in sport – are soulmates and enjoy their tennis tremendously.
The third team is second in the seventh division and, as captain Andy Baxter says, the attitude is: “Roll on Craigie in two week’s time for what is potentially the league decider.”
Against Falkland, which has just two courts, the first pair of Graeme Newton and Fraser McGlynn drew their two-set match and comprehensively won their two one-set matches. The second pair of Andy and Scott Lorimer won their two-set match and split their single sets.
Against Scone 2 the first pair of Andy and Alistair Sievewright won all six sets with the loss of just 13 games. The third pair of Jamie Shakespeare and Andy Thorogood were unlucky as they lost six close sets.
The ladies’ second team also chalked up two more victories, with a walkover against Duffus 2 of Cupar and a victory over Wormit and Newport 2 away 11-7 to make it seven wins in a row and stay at the top of the Sixth Division table.
However the men’s first team’s winning streak ended at six as they lost 11-7 away to West End. The first pair of Andy Moffat and Graeme Walker won their matches easily, but the second pair of Nick Whitecross and Chad Neighbor only pulled out one set, while the third pair of Richie Wallace and Scott Lorimer failed to take any.
The loss will cost the team first place in the tables as West End has a better set difference, but a win next week away at Tayport would guarantee promotion to the First Division next year.
The men’s second team stayed in the hunt for promotion with a morale-building 11-7 win against Kinross that erased memories of a 16-2 away loss. The first pair of Donald Watson and Fraser McGlynn won four sets, the second pair of Chris Hardy and Graeme Newton won three and David McArthur and Neil Werninck won four.
The ladies’ first team continued to find life in the second division difficult as they lost to division leaders Scone 13-5.
The top pair of Katrina Pert and Linda Cuthill did well to win five sets but Caroline Stewart and Barbara Watson didn’t win one despite earning into a tie-break. The third pair were Jen Richardson and Rhona Alston.
