Sporty youngsters at Montrose Academy achieved an unexpected but excellent result against a strong Brechin High School team beating them 36-28.

The Specsavers Challenge Shield was contested for and won by Brechin at Murrayfield in June 2013. The Montrose Academy students were presented with the trophy on Thursday (February 20).

Montrose have now had a few after school under 16 training sessions with Gus Robb, Local Multi Agency Resource Team (LMART) development worker, to use the rugby as positive activity for the youngsters and a way for them to interact with each other and the local community.

Stewart Ross, rugby development officer for Angus, said: “I am pleased that a good number of the rugby referral group players now play for their school or club.”

The youngsters who played are John McDonald; Michael Paton; Steve Livingston; Lewis Pullar; Fraser Muir, first half captain; Owen Steele; Murray Soutar; Callum Thomas, second half captain; Jay Docherty, man-of-the-match; Duncan Ruxton; Jordan Dickson; Domenic Coull.
