Despite the frosty start to Saturday, Montrose’s fixtures against Lathallan School went ahead.
Due to the firmness of the ground, the P4/5 and the P6/7 coaches agreed that it was best to play touch. This resulted in some excellent ball handling and running from all of the players.
On the big pitch, Montrose Under-18 took on their Lathallan counterparts in a game of 10-a-side. From the start, a well-drilled Lathallan side passed the ball across the pitch to create space.
While there was some Montrose tackling to stop their progress, the Lathallan side started to find ways through. By half-time, Lathallan had built up a healthy lead of 24 points to 5.
In the second half, the Montrose commitment improved and this was reflected in a far closer game. Throughout, both sides kept the ball alive through offloading and when the final whistle was blown, Lathallan were victorious by 36 points to 17.
This was followed by the S1/2s fixture. Lathallan opened the scoring with a well worked try, running from their own 22. Montrose responded by bringing good structure to their game and upping the intensity of their tackling.
This resulted in a number of tries and at the interval they were in front 20-7.
The Montrose team was looking to steal the ball in the breakdown. This allowed the forwards to run round the edges of rucks and mauls as well as releasing the backs. This fast, flowing rugby resulted in more tries for the boys in green; the finest example being the final try rounded-off by winger Naismith.
Other Montrose players who scored tries included Adams, Beattie, Gammie and Hill. The Lathallan try scorers were Campbell, Grant and Simpson.
The final score was Montrose 40, Lathallan 14.
The P4/5 squad went to Arbroath on Sunday to take on the Rhinos. The Montrose players showed what they had learned from the match the day before and ran in some excellent tries.
This weekend, the Under-16 team will play their final fixture of the Midlands Development League against Kinross.
The Montrose Girls’ squad has been invited to a SRU national training session in Dundee in advance of the Scotland vs Italy women’s international there.
