THE INCH Open Pairs began last Sunday with an entry of 24 pairs from various clubs in the area.

This year, competitors were fortunate with the weather all week, particularly on final night, when the game was played in brilliant sunshine - and to match the weather the final was brilliant, too.

It was between Graham Fowler and Eric Paton from Boyle Park, Forfar; and John Dempsey and Eddie Main, Hope Paton.

After four ends it was all square at four-all, then John and Eddie edged in front with a 2-2-1 to lead 7-4, but a 3-1 put then one in arrears after 10 ends.

Although picking up two on end 11 saw them regain the lead, the next three ends were to prove crucial for Graham and Eric, when a 3-2-2 for them gave them a nice cushion with one end to play.

The Hope Paton pair, needing a seven to win, only managed a two, to leave them trailing by 15 shots to 11, with Graham and Eric worthy winners.

Inch president Arlene Rushmere thanked all who had made the week a success, especially the competitors.

Match secretary Dennis Baillie presented trophy and prizes.
