Gregor almost rises to new Scottish record

MONTROSE’S Scottish number one pole-vaulter, Gregor Maclean (19), just missed out on his country’s indoor record at the Birmingham Games on Saturday.

Gregor, a former pupil of Montrose Academy who is studying sports coaching at Loughborough University, had cleared 5.11 metres and then set out to beat the existing 5.16m record.

He told the Review about his try on 5.17m: “I had one attempt and gave it a really good shot. Most of my body cleared the bar, but it just caught my chest.”

However, Gregor has two more chances to continue his current excellent form and take the Scottish record.

This weekend he will be competing in the UK Championships in Sheffield.

And on February 26 he will take part in the Scottish national indoor championships in Glasgow.
