MONTROSE has a British boxing champion in the shape of 13-year-old Nathan Shaw.

Nathan, who is about to go into second year at Montrose Academy, now holds the Northern Districts, Scottish and United Kingdom titles.

He gained the UK title in Cardiff where he was a member of the Scottish squad at the national event.

In the semi-final Nathan beat the Welsh champion by 16 points to five, and in the final the following day disposed of the English contender by 13 points to seven.

Nathan has now joined a top Scottish boxing club, The Bronx, Edinburgh, and he hopes that the intense coaching he receives there will take him to more glory in the ring.

His former coach in Montrose, Scott Graham, is full of praise for the youngster, who he sees as a potential Commonwealth and even Olympic Champion.

Scott said: “I congratulate Nathan for joining his new club, The Bronx, and wish him every success, including his efforts for the national squad.

“I’ve watched him come from being a shy, nervous youngster at his first Park Hotel club show bout, to the mature, intelligent, confident young athlete today.

“Nathan has a great temperament in and out of the ring, and is a credit to his parents and himself.

“We are all very proud of him.”

Does Nathan have any other hobbies?

“No,” he replied. He is dedicated to boxing.

His next outing will be very soon, at an Ireland v Scotland international in Dublin on August 11.

• At the UK Championships Montrose had another successful competitor, 14-year-old John Docherty, who won a silver medal, in the 65 kilo category, narrowly beaten by only three points by the Irish Champion.
