Last Sunday, Union Park was baking in the last of the summer sun, as Crieff and Strathearn brought their Under-18 and Under-16 teams for league matches. Both visiting teams were light on numbers, so they forfeited the points and Montrose gave players from their squads for development matches.

At U16, the Montrose side make a robust start with a fast off-loading game opening gaps to allow captain Lindsay run in two early tries. As the first period of 20 minutes came to a close, Montrose were up 3 tries without any response.

After changing some more players into Crieff strips, the second and third periods were similar with Montrose closing down Crieff through aggressive tackling and using their backs well in counter-attack.

Further tries came from Campbell, Beattie. Hill, Donaldson and Coull. Crieff managed two tries in the match, but Montrose came out convincing winners 57-10. The 18s also loaned players to Crieff for a 15-a-side match. Both sides were evenly matched with the Montrose backs playing open, running rugby. As the game progressed, the forwards upped their game with aggressive rucking to secure clean ball that allowed Campbnell and Batt to secure tries. After three periods of 20 minutes, the combined Crieff/Montrose side squeezed a victory 19-17.

Friday sees the 18s head to Blairgowrie to take on a combined Blairgowrie / Perthshire team while the 16s travel to Glenrothes on Sunday.
