EDZELL’S Ross Coull was this year’s winner of the Montrose Open Golf Tournament.

He defeated clubmate Willie Bremner in Friday’s final, played in the best weather of the week.

Losing semi-finalists were Ewan Croll, yet another Edzell member; and Royal Montrose player Alistair Serrells.

Quarter-finalists were Ian Galbraith, Murcar, Gary Tough, Edzell; Neil Moncur, Northwood and Gavin Hemsley, Montrose Mercantile.

Winner of the scratch to 11 handicap section was Montrose Mercantile’s Jamie Beedie, who beat Stuart Benson, Cawder, in the final.

Defeated semi-finalists were Paul McLauglin, Brechin and Mark Wood, Arbroath Artisans. Quarter-finalists were Jamie Davidson, Montrose Mercantile; Graham Hemsley, Royal Montrose; Azzie Paton, Royal Montrose and Tony Scappaticci, Montrose Mercantile.

Bruce Logan, Forfar, won the 12-18 handicap section, and Andrew Cole, Drumpellier was the beaten finalist.

Losing semi-finalists were Andy Law, Callander and Willie Pearson, Sheddens Lethamhill. Quarter-finalists were Neil Parham, Mid Kent; Tony O’Dell, Montrose Caledonia; Neil Watson, Montrose Mercantile and Hugh Riddell, Kemnay.

Top veteran was Willie Burness, Montrose Caledonia, who beat John Rushmere, Montrose Mercantile in the final. Beaten semi-finalists were Robert West, Montrose Mercantile and Jim Riddell, also Montrose Mercantile.

Cameron Shield winner was Ronan Valentine, Royal Montrose, whose opponent in the final was Joe McDonald, Montrose Mercantile. That club produced both losing semi-finalists, Jordan Harrison and Sam Balfour.

The final four in the Cameron Cup were all Montrose Mercantile members. Winner was Findlay Soutar, who beat Greg Spark in the final. Defeated semi-finalists were Stewart Turriff and Steven Gordon, Montrose Mercantile.

Connor Lambert, Royal Montrose, won the Milne Cup, with Sean Logue, Royal Montrose, the runner-up.

Best round prizes were won as follows.

Ross Coull scooped the scratch awards, with the lowest qualifying aggregate of 139, comprising rounds of 69 on Monday and 70 (b16) on Tuesday.

The handicap aggregate prize went to Alex McDonald, Arbroath Artisans, 139; and the first and second round winners were Neil Watson, Montrose Mercantile, 67 (bih); and Johnny Walkden, Royal Montrose, 66.

Consolation prizes were awarded to: scratch - Wednesday, Scott Barr, Falkirk Carmuirs, 80; Thursday, Fraser Auld, Caledonia 73; handicap - Wednesday, Liam Murray, Falkirk Carmuirs, 70; Thursday, Josh Browning, Mid Kent, 73; veterans - Wednesday, Les Davie, Nigg Bay, 64 (bih); Thursday, Stewart Robertson, Mercantile, 63.

Ladies’ Open

Claire Penman, Carnoustie Ladies, was the winner of the George and Ethel Norrie Trophy for the best scratch round in the Montrose Ladies’ Open with 77.

Second place went to Kathleen Sutherland, Royal Montrose, 79.

CSS for the day was – 76 home, 73 visitors.

The Nicoll Trophy for best handicap overall and winner of the silver division was won by Anita Smith, Retford (19) 71.

The rest of the silver division results were: 2, Jan Cappi, Carnoustie Ladies) (17) 73; 3, Colette Blacklock, Ryde Parramatta (14) 75 bih; 4, Betty Cole, Royal Montrose Ladies (19) 75 bih.

Hole in one

In the qualifying rounds of the Montrose Open, Jamie McLaren, Royal Montrose, had a hole in one at the 154-yard par three third hole using a seven iron. Playing partners were Andrew Mitchell, Royal Montrose and Hugh Riddell, Kemnay).
