Rugby revival hits Montrose big time

Montrose Junior Rugby played host to Lathallan School last Saturday with matches at P4/5, P6/7, S1/2 and under-16 levels.

It was the first time that Lathallan had played Montrose but fixtures are already in the diary for next season.

Following their withdrawal from the league, Montrose Senior XV has been rebuilding its squad and played its first game for some months when they took on Stobswell in a friendly.

Terry Gibbons, Montrose captain, said: “It was a real milestone getting the team out to play today with a mix of familiar and new faces at the club.

“To watch my son play in the morning and then have a game myself in the afternoon has been great. There is a real sense of community at the club and we can look forward with real confidence with players representing Montrose from primary school right up to those who should know better!”

Last Wednesday, the ladies’ section held a taster session for anyone interested in training or playing.

This was led by Nick Burge, the Scottish Rugby Women’s Development Officer for Tayside and Fife, and enjoyed by current and new players. On Sunday (March 25), the ladies will be playing a match in National League Two at Union Park.

The minis will soon be heading to the annual tournament at Carnoustie and the S1/2s will be taking on Waid in Anstruther.

Next weekend sees the under-16 team is due to travel to Crieff to play in the quarter final of the Caledonian Bowl competition.

And the 1st XV have a match on March 31 away to Panmure.
