Union Park played host to Carnoustie and Arbroath for the first junior tournament of the year.

Matches were played at Micros (P1-3), P4/5, P6/7 and S1/2.

The Montrose S1/2 squad were presented with new strips for the 12/13 season by new sponsors RT McEwan Limited and McEwan Farms.

The strips clearly brought out the best in the players, scoring tries to secure convincing wins against both Carnoustie and Arbroath.

The 1st XV had their first league fixture against Harris FP 2nd XV at Elliott Road in Dundee.

With a clear sky, Montrose started playing up the hill, pressurising the Harris defence early and scoring two tries in the first 20 minutes.

Harris then countered for a 10-minute spell, testing the Montrose defence, but they didn’t break through to score.

This appeared to knock the wind out of the Harris team and the game swung in favour of Montrose’s favour with several tries scored. Scorers included Jamie Callaghan, Jamie Gardiner, Steve Oakley and Jeremy Quinn with three to his name.

In the last 10 minutes Harris broke out, against the run of play, to score a converted try. The final score was a Montrose win, 55-7.

Coach Chris Allison said: “This is exactly the start to the season we wanted. Whilst there are still areas to improve on, overall it was a solid performance that gives us a great platform for the rest of the season”.

Montrose 1st XV are playing Kirkcaldy 2nd XV at Union Park on Saturday, with a 3pm kick-off. Spectators are welcome.
