Schools’ giant heptathlon at Academy

ANGUS Sports Development Team in partnership with ScottishAthletics provided all Angus Secondary Schools with a Giant Heptathlon for S1 and S2 pupils.

The event took place at Montrose Sports Centre on January 21 and 28.

The S2 event shaped up in the format of coaching in the morning and competition in the afternoon.

The pupils were coached through each event in the morning by Angus Council Sports Development coaches.

The S1 event consisted of the competition part of the programme.

It is a transition event for pupils who have taken part in the Fun in Athletics programme at primary school and are in preparation for the S2 Giant Heptathlon.

Each secondary school entered a team of seven girls and seven boys in the S1 and S2 event, and the pupils each competed in seven different events: sprints, standing long jump, hurdles, shot putt or chest push, bean-bag challenge, standing triple jump or vertical jump and step-up challenge.

Teams rotated around the activities with each child participating in each event. Scoring was based on the overall team score after all seven events had been completed.

The schools finishing first and second in the S2 event are invited to the Tayside and Fife Giant Heptathlon Regional Final, where they will compete against schools from Dundee, Perth and Fife.

Websters High School was first, with Arbroath High School finishing second.

Indeed, Websters High completed the double and took the S1 Giant Heptathlon title on top of the S2.

Monifieth High School were runners up in the S1 event.

Angus Council Sports development officer Laura Baxter presented the trophies to Websters High.
