Local artist Frances Law will be giving a workshop at Dundee Botanical Gardens on Saturday and Sunday, April 5 and 6 from 10 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.
The workshop will introduce participants to the intimate study of form through the observation of the many beautiful flowers and foliage in the 9.5 hectares of land near the banks of the River Tay.
Frances, whose classes and workshops are always popular, has been teaching throughout the Tayside area for over 15 years. Living and working at her home and studio near Kirriemuir, she has exhibited her work locally and internationally since graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1980.
She said: “This workshop will take its inspiration from the prolific American artist Georgia O’Keefe. Exploring the many ways in which this perceptive artist used form, colour and shape to create her wonderful flower paintings, we will endeavour to create our own drawings and paintings of flowers, leaves and natural forms.
“We will work with a wide array of techniques and materials ranging from pastels, charcoal and water-based paint and with a variety of scale both large and small.
“The workshop is suitable for all skill levels where everyone will be encouraged to produce confident and sensitive drawings and paintings in a creative, constructive and relaxing environment.”
The Botanical Gardens in Dundee is a wonderful resource for all artists with a wide range of plants and a fine collection of conifers, broad-leaved trees and shrubs and tropical and temperate glasshouses. There are also water and herb gardens and many species of indigenous British plants as well as representative collections of important plants from all the continents of the world.
Frances continued: “The start of spring is a beautiful time in the garden. It will be lovely to get out and see what is flowering after the wet winter months. We also have the warmth and shelter of the glass houses if the weather is not in our favour. With a soup and sandwich lunch included in the workshop price of £120, we are set to have a fantastic weekend!”
Places are booked on a first come first served basis. Contact Frances via www.islaart.co.uk or by email firstname.lastname@example.org or on 01575 530248.
